3 hour GTT was a major fail.
I had my 3 hour Glucose Tolerance Test on the morning of the 21st at 9:00am... They made me fast for FOURTEEN hours. Yes that's right. 14. The nurse who had scheduled it for me told me I could not eat after 7:00pm the night before. They took nearly an hour after I got to the hospital to do my first "fasting draw" and give me the glucose drink. Within the first 10 minutes after drinking it, I was feeling really lightheaded. The nurse said that was normal, because it was so heavy in sugar. I ended up having to put my head between my knees (well, as best as I could with my belly) to keep from passing out. Fast forward an hour.... they do my second draw. The lab tech said that I looked VERY pale and kind of out of it. I told her I was really dizzy and lightheaded and hot and shaky. She asked me if laying down would help and I thought it would. So they transferred me to Women's Health so I could lay down, and they would have the lab tech come to me for the next draws. The beds in womens health are all the "baby safe" beds, where you are pretty much sitting up anyway, so that didn't help much. I am pretty sure I fainted at some point while I was in that room, but I KNOW I had two medium severity panic attacks while sitting in there. I was just feeling worse and worse the more time that went on. The tech came in and did my third draw and I let her know what was going on, and she said as long as I didn't throw up, we could continue the test. WELL maybe 2 minutes after she leaves the room, I started throwing up. More than any human who has been fasting should. It was TERRIBLE. and painful. I went and told the nurse what happened, and she said they would have to end the test. She was going to find my OB and ask her what she would like to do. She wanted me to go to the ER so they could give me fluids, do a few blood tests, and for observation. They checked peanut's heartbeat with the doppler before they transferred me, and he was looking just fine at 147bpm. Once I got down to Emergency, they gave me an iv... and I had another BAD panic attack. The Dr on ER duty gave me THREE syringes of zofran to stop it, and to keep me from throwing up any more. It actually helped a lot. They had given me a LARGE bag of iv fluid, and wanted me to have the whole bag. Maybe an hour after I was sitting in there, they brought me food, and I could've kissed the nurse who brought it in. Turkey and mashed potatos and steamed carrots and peaches and tomato soup... I ate it ALL. lol. And once the food got to my stomach, I felt just fine again, aside from being really tired. The blood tests must have come back normal, because they discharged me as soon as the bag of fluid was empty (4 hours, on top of the 2 I spent doing the glucose test.... which they couldn't even use because I didn't finish it.) They want me to call to schedule a "jelly belly test" (Which is generally the same as the normal glucose screen thing, only instead of drinking the glucola, you eat 52 jelly belly beans....) for next week, but I am really thinking of refusing it. I do not EVER want to go through what I did today again. It was TERRIFYING!!!
